Rare Leninsk Cover for the Aborted Soyuz T-10-1 Mission – Signed by Vladimir Titov & Gennady Strekalov – From the Jacques Bracke Collection

A highly significant Soviet spaceflight cover from Leninsk, the historic support city of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, associated with the dramatic aborted launch of Soyuz T-10-1 and hand-signed by its complete crew, Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov.

Scheduled for launch to the Salyut 7 space station in September 1983, Soyuz T-10-1 became one of the most extraordinary survival episodes in the history of crewed spaceflight. Shortly before liftoff, the launch vehicle caught fire on the pad. With the booster engulfed in flames, ground controllers manually activated the Soyuz launch escape system, which pulled Titov and Strekalov clear only seconds before the rocket exploded. The crew endured acceleration forces of approximately 14–17 g but landed safely several kilometers from the launch site.

The mission therefore stands as one of the clearest demonstrations of the life-saving importance of the Soyuz emergency escape system and remains a landmark event in Soviet spaceflight history.

Signed by both men whose lives were saved during the abort, this Leninsk cover possesses a particularly direct connection to that historic event. Its origin from Leninsk—today Baikonur—further strengthens its association with the launch complex from which the mission was intended to depart.

Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned astrophilatelist Jacques Bracke, whose holdings included important Soviet, Russian, Mir, Shuttle, and ISS postal history. Examples from the Bracke family collection have been offered through major specialist space auctions.
