Hans Schlegel conducted research in semiconductor physics before being trained as an
astronaut in the late 1980s by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He flew as a DLR
payload specialist in 1993 aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-55, which included the
German-sponsored Spacelab D-2 research module.
In 1998, Hans Schlegel became a member of the European Astronaut Corps. He flew to space as a mission specialist on the STS-122 Space Shuttle mission. The mission was charged with carrying the Columbus laboratory into orbit and connecting it to the International Space Station.
