Project Mercury was the first manned spacecraft program in the US. The program included unmanned test flights prior to the Mercury 7 astronauts, flying six manned missions. Two suborbital missions (MR-3 and MR-4), launched using Redstone rockets, were followed by four orbital flights (MA-6, MA-7, MA-8 and MA-9) using Atlas rockets.
