EXPEDITION 40 COMPLETE CREW-SIGNED NASA PORTRAIT

Official 8 × 10-Inch NASA Lithograph • Signed by All Six Crew Members

Featuring Reid Wiseman, Artemis II Commander

An exceptionally rare official NASA Expedition 40 crew portrait, measuring approximately 8 × 10 inches and hand-signed by all six astronauts and cosmonauts who served aboard the International Space Station during the expedition.

The complete crew represented NASA, Roscosmos and the European Space Agency:

Steven R. Swanson — NASA astronaut and Expedition 40 Commander
Alexander Skvortsov — Roscosmos cosmonaut and Flight Engineer
Oleg Artemyev — Roscosmos cosmonaut and Flight Engineer
Maksim Suraev — Roscosmos cosmonaut and Flight Engineer
Alexander Gerst — ESA astronaut and Flight Engineer
G. Reid Wiseman — NASA astronaut and Flight Engineer

NASA’s official Expedition 40 portrait identifies all six crew members and shows, from left, Alexander Skvortsov, Steve Swanson, Oleg Artemyev, Alexander Gerst, Maksim Suraev and Reid Wiseman.

Expedition 40: International Research in Low Earth Orbit

Expedition 40 was conducted aboard the International Space Station in 2014, during a mature phase of continuous human occupation in orbit. The six-person crew supported a broad program of scientific research, spacecraft operations, station maintenance and international cooperation.

The expedition brought together two separate Soyuz crews. Swanson, Skvortsov and Artemyev had arrived aboard Soyuz TMA-12M, while Suraev, Gerst and Wiseman reached the station aboard Soyuz TMA-13M.

During their time together, the crew worked on investigations involving human physiology, medicine, materials science, Earth observation, technology development and the effects of long-duration spaceflight. The ISS also served as a test platform for systems and procedures intended to support future exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

Reid Wiseman: From Expedition 40 to Artemis II

This portrait has particular historical importance because it includes the signature of Reid Wiseman.

Expedition 40 marked Wiseman’s first spaceflight. He launched aboard Soyuz TMA-13M with Maksim Suraev and Alexander Gerst and served as a flight engineer during Expeditions 40 and 41. Over approximately 165 days in orbit, Wiseman and his crewmates supported more than 300 scientific investigations and technology experiments.

Wiseman also completed two spacewalks during the mission and later served as Chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office.

He subsequently became commander of Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed Orion mission around the Moon and the first crewed lunar voyage of the Artemis era. The Artemis II crew also included NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch, together with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

Wiseman’s signature therefore connects this ISS portrait with two major phases of modern human spaceflight: long-duration international operations in low Earth orbit and the renewed human exploration of the Moon.

Alexander Gerst

Expedition 40 was also the first spaceflight of German ESA astronaut and geophysicist Alexander Gerst. His mission was known as Blue Dot and included an extensive program of scientific, technological and educational work aboard the station.

Gerst later returned to the ISS in 2018 and became the first German to command the orbital laboratory. He has remained closely involved in European astronaut operations and preparations for future ISS and lunar missions.

The Complete Expedition 40 Crew

Steven Swanson commanded Expedition 40 and was a veteran of two earlier Space Shuttle missions.

Alexander Skvortsov served as a Roscosmos flight engineer and later returned to the station for an additional long-duration mission.

Oleg Artemyev was making his first spaceflight and participated in Russian-segment operations and extravehicular activities.

Maksim Suraev was a veteran cosmonaut and commander of Soyuz TMA-13M.

Alexander Gerst was flying his first mission and later became Germany’s first ISS commander.

Reid Wiseman was also on his first spaceflight and later commanded Artemis II.

Collecting Significance

Complete six-person Expedition crew portraits are considerably more difficult to assemble than photographs signed by a single Soyuz crew. Obtaining every signature generally required access to astronauts and cosmonauts from three different space agencies and two separate spacecraft crews.

This example combines:

  • Official NASA 8 × 10-inch lithograph
  • Signatures of all six Expedition 40 crew members
  • Representation of NASA, Roscosmos and ESA
  • Reid Wiseman’s first spaceflight
  • Alexander Gerst’s first spaceflight
  • Direct connection to Soyuz TMA-12M and Soyuz TMA-13M
  • Association with the future commander of Artemis II
  • Excellent display potential

This is the first complete crew-signed example of this official Expedition 40 portrait that we have encountered.

A highly desirable artifact for collectors of International Space Station memorabilia, complete mission crews, NASA lithographs, Reid Wiseman, Alexander Gerst or Artemis-related autographs.

Condition: Excellent to Mint.
