A very rare Bendix cachet First Day Cover commemorating the historic Apollo 8 mission, beautifully hand-signed by the complete crew: Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders.

This exceptional example originates directly from the personal collection of Walter Cunningham, who has annotated the reverse in his own hand: “From my personal collection.” Cunningham flew on Apollo 7, the critical test flight that proved the Apollo Command Module ready for the ambitious missions that followed.

The Historic Apollo 8 Mission

Launched in December 1968, Apollo 8 became one of the most important milestones in human spaceflight. Borman, Lovell, and Anders were the first humans ever to leave Earth orbit, travel to the Moon, and orbit another celestial body.

During the mission, Anders captured the famous “Earthrise” photograph—one of the most influential images in history—showing the Earth rising above the lunar horizon. On Christmas Eve 1968, the crew also delivered their iconic live broadcast from lunar orbit, reading from the Book of Genesis while millions watched on Earth.

Legacy and Connection to the Artemis Era

Apollo 8 opened the pathway for later lunar landings and remains one of the most daring missions ever flown. More than half a century later, its legacy continues with Artemis II, which will once again send astronauts around the Moon. Like Apollo 8, Artemis II will be the first crewed mission of a new lunar exploration program, retracing the pioneering journey first undertaken by Borman, Lovell, and Anders in 1968.
