APOLLO 12 COMPLETE CREW-SIGNED “MOONSHOT” COMIC BOOK
Special 25th Anniversary Edition
Signed by Pete Conrad, Alan Bean and Richard Gordon
An outstanding copy of Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 12, the special 25th-anniversary edition of the celebrated illustrated account of NASA’s second crewed lunar-landing mission.
The front cover has been hand-signed by the complete Apollo 12 crew:
Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr. — Mission Commander
Richard F. Gordon Jr. — Command Module Pilot
Alan L. Bean — Lunar Module Pilot
Complete Apollo crew-signed items are especially desirable, and this visually striking comic-book format offers an accessible and highly displayable record of one of the most successful missions of the Apollo era.
Apollo 12: The Pinpoint Mission
Apollo 12 launched from Kennedy Space Center on 14 November 1969, only four months after the historic Apollo 11 landing. The mission was commanded by Pete Conrad, with Richard Gordon piloting the Command Module Yankee Clipper and Alan Bean serving as Lunar Module Pilot aboard Intrepid.
The mission began dramatically when the Saturn V was struck by lightning twice shortly after liftoff. Several spacecraft systems temporarily lost power, but the crew and Mission Control quickly restored normal operation, allowing Apollo 12 to continue safely toward the Moon.
On 19 November 1969, Conrad and Bean landed Intrepid in the Ocean of Storms, achieving one of the defining objectives of the mission: a highly accurate landing close to the unmanned Surveyor 3 spacecraft, which had reached the Moon in April 1967. They touched down only a short walking distance from the robotic probe, demonstrating that future Apollo crews could land near carefully selected scientific targets.
The Apollo 12 Crew
Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr.
Conrad commanded the mission and became the third person to walk on the Moon. A veteran of Gemini 5 and Gemini 11, he later commanded the first crewed Skylab mission, during which his crew helped repair the damaged orbital workshop.
Alan L. Bean
Bean became the fourth person to walk on the Moon. Together with Conrad, he conducted two lunar-surface excursions, deployed scientific instruments and visited Surveyor 3. He later commanded the second crewed Skylab mission and became widely known as an artist whose paintings depicted his experiences on the lunar surface.
Richard F. Gordon Jr.
While Conrad and Bean explored the surface, Gordon remained alone in lunar orbit aboard Yankee Clipper, conducting photography, navigation and spacecraft operations essential to the mission’s success. He later served as backup commander for Apollo 15.
Lunar Science and the Surveyor 3 Visit
During their two moonwalks, Conrad and Bean deployed the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, collected geological samples and photographed the landing region.
They also walked to Surveyor 3, removed several components and returned them to Earth so scientists could examine how hardware and materials had been affected by more than two years of exposure to the lunar environment. The scientific instruments deployed by Apollo 12 continued transmitting valuable information about the Moon for several years.
