An exceptional collector’s piece combining authentic flown spacecraft material with fine numismatic craftsmanship. This impressive medallion was produced by Winco International, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier manufacturers of aerospace medallions and a long-time supplier producing commemorative items for NASA missions and programs.
At the heart of the medallion lies a visible flown fragment of Kapton thermal foil originating from the historic Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia. The approximately 6 × 6 mm section of Kapton—a material used on spacecraft to protect against the extreme temperature fluctuations of space—is permanently sealed beneath a clear acrylic layer, allowing the flown artifact to remain safely preserved while clearly visible.
The Command Module Columbia carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins during the historic Apollo 11 in July 1969. While Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the Lunar Module Eagle, Collins piloted Columbia in lunar orbit, later returning the crew safely to Earth. The spacecraft is now preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where it stands as one of humanity’s most important technological artifacts.
Unlike most commemorative space medallions, which feature only symbolic designs, this piece contains actual flown spacecraft material, making it both a historical artifact and a striking display item.
