Soyuz TM-18 Flown MIR Cover – Valeri Polyakov Record Flight – One of Only Six Produced – Jacques Bracke Collection

A very rare flown Mir space station cover from Soyuz TM-18, postmarked onboard February 3, 1994, and associated with one of the greatest endurance achievements in human spaceflight.

Soyuz TM-18 launched on January 8, 1994, carrying Viktor Afanasyev, Yuri Usachyov, and physician-cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov to Mir. Afanasyev and Usachyov returned to Earth in July 1994, while Polyakov remained aboard, ultimately completing an extraordinary 437 days, 17 hours and 58 minutes in continuous spaceflight—a record for the longest single human space mission that still stands today.

Polyakov’s marathon mission had major scientific importance, demonstrating that the human body and mind could withstand a period in microgravity comparable to the duration of a potential round-trip expedition to Mars. His work became a landmark in the study of long-duration human spaceflight.

The present example is reportedly one of only six covers produced, making it an exceptionally scarce philatelic document of this historic mission.

Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned astrophilatelist Jacques Bracke.
