Expedition 10 Official RKK Energia Flown ISS Cover with Original Onboard Cancellation Instructions – Signed and Postmarked – Jacques Bracke Collection

An exceptional official RKK Energia flown International Space Station cover from Expedition 10, hand-signed by the resident crew and accompanied by the original Energia instruction sheet detailing how the covers were to be cancelled aboard the ISS—an unusually rare surviving document revealing the formal procedure behind official flown space mail.

Expedition 10 was commanded by NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao, with Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov serving as Flight Engineer. They launched aboard Soyuz TMA-5 on October 13, 2004, together with visiting cosmonaut Yuri Shargin, who spent approximately a week aboard the ISS before returning with the outgoing Expedition 9 crew. Chiao and Sharipov remained aboard for more than six months, conducting scientific research, station maintenance, and two spacewalks during a period when Soyuz spacecraft provided the principal crew transportation capability following the loss of Columbia.

Of outstanding astrophilatelic importance, the lot retains the original RKK Energia instruction sheet governing the onboard cancellation of these envelopes. The sheet itself was carried aboard the ISS, cancelled in orbit, and additionally signed by cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Gennady Padalka, making it a remarkable documentary artifact in its own right.

Rather than merely representing a flown cover, this ensemble provides a rare behind-the-scenes view of the official preparation, handling, and certification of Russian ISS space mail—material that would normally remain administrative rather than enter private collections.

Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned astrophilatelist Jacques Bracke.

A particularly important lot for the advanced astrophilatelist, combining an official RKK Energia Expedition 10 flown cover with its original onboard postal instructions—an exceptionally rare record of the procedures used to create and authenticate flown ISS philatelic material.
