Mission Significance:
Launched February 11–21, 1997, STS-82 was NASA’s second Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission. The crew performed five spacewalks, replacing and upgrading key scientific instruments, including installing the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). These upgrades significantly extended Hubble’s scientific capabilities and impact.
