The cover received its first postal cancellation in Frankfurt on July 8, 2006, when Germany was hosting one of the most memorable FIFA World Cups of the modern era. That same evening, the German national team defeated Portugal 3–1 in the third-place play-off, bringing the host nation’s celebrated tournament to an emotional conclusion.

Just over two months later, the cover completed a far more unusual journey—from Germany to the International Space Station.

It was postmarked aboard the ISS on September 20, 2006, the date Soyuz TMA-9 docked with the orbital complex and delivered the incoming Expedition 14 crew.

A handwritten letter sent to the commander of the ISS

Inside the cover is the original handwritten letter from noted astrophilatelist Igor Rodin to Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, who was serving as commander of Expedition 13 aboard the International Space Station.

Unlike a purely commemorative cover, this was genuine private correspondence addressed to a named astronaut living in orbit. The complete letter remains inside and is accompanied by an English translation, allowing the collector to appreciate both its philatelic importance and its personal content.

The combination of the original enclosure, its terrestrial cancellation and its later onboard ISS postmark makes this a particularly evocative example of private space mail.

Soyuz TMA-9 and the Expedition 14 crew

Soyuz TMA-9 carried three people to the International Space Station:

• Michael López-Alegría — NASA astronaut and incoming Expedition 14 commander
• Mikhail Tyurin — Roscosmos cosmonaut and Soyuz commander
• Anousheh Ansari — private spaceflight participant

The spacecraft docked with the ISS on September 20, 2006—the exact date recorded by the onboard cancellation. López-Alegría and Tyurin arrived to begin their long-duration Expedition 14 assignment, while Ansari completed a shorter visit before returning to Earth with members of Expedition 13.

At the time of the docking, the resident Expedition 13 crew consisted of:

Pavel Vinogradov: the recipient in orbit

The letter was personally addressed to Pavel Vinogradov, one of Russia’s most experienced cosmonauts.

Vinogradov commanded Expedition 13 and was living aboard the ISS when Soyuz TMA-9 arrived. Together with Jeffrey Williams and German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter, he formed the resident crew that received the new Soyuz visitors and incoming expedition members.

This direct association with the station commander distinguishes the cover from ordinary souvenir mail. It represents a genuine line of communication between a specialist collector on Earth and a veteran cosmonaut in orbit.

From Germany’s “summer fairy tale” to space

The 2006 World Cup in Germany became widely remembered for its festive international atmosphere and was popularly described in Germany as a Sommermärchen—a “summer fairy tale.”

The Frankfurt cancellation dated July 8 places the cover within the tournament’s final weekend, on the day of Germany’s third-place victory over Portugal. Its subsequent journey aboard Soyuz TMA-9 extended that story beyond Earth, linking one of the world’s greatest sporting events with the international cooperation represented by the ISS.

The presence of German ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter aboard the station adds another meaningful connection. While Germany celebrated the World Cup on Earth, Reiter was preparing for—and later serving during—the mission period in which this piece of private mail reached orbit.
