An extraordinary artifact of long-duration human spaceflight: an original private-mail cover carried aboard the International Space Station throughout the historic One-Year Mission of Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko.

Originating from the collection of renowned astrophilatelist Jacques Bracke, the cover bears four postal cancellations applied aboard the ISS between March 2015 and March 2016, documenting its presence in orbit across an entire year of crew rotations and station operations.

Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko’s historic One-Year Mission

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Roscosmos cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko launched aboard Soyuz TMA-16M on March 27, 2015, together with veteran cosmonaut Gennady Padalka.

Kelly and Kornienko remained aboard the ISS for 340 days, serving continuously through Expeditions 43, 44, 45 and 46. Their mission was designed to study how the human body and mind respond to an exceptionally long period in microgravity, producing research relevant to future expeditions to the Moon and Mars.

Kelly served first as a flight engineer and later commanded Expeditions 45 and 46. His mission included thousands of Earth orbits, scientific research, station maintenance and three spacewalks. Kornienko participated in the same long-duration medical and physiological research program as his American crewmate.

The pair returned to Earth aboard Soyuz TMA-18M in March 2016 with cosmonaut Sergey Volkov, completing one of the longest joint expeditions in ISS history.

Four onboard cancellations spanning an entire year

The cover carries four separate postmarks applied aboard the International Space Station, extending from the beginning of the mission in March 2015 to its conclusion in March 2016.

Rather than documenting a single docking or departure, these markings trace the cover’s continued presence aboard the station through four successive expeditions and several changes of crew.

Kononenko, Lindgren and Yui arrived aboard Soyuz TMA-17M in July 2015 and joined Kelly, Kornienko and Padalka during Expedition 44.

Volkov, Mogensen and Aimbetov arrived aboard Soyuz TMA-18M in September 2015. Volkov remained for a long-duration expedition, while Mogensen and Aimbetov completed shorter ISS visits and returned with Padalka aboard Soyuz TMA-16M.

Expedition 46

Malenchenko, Kopra and Peake arrived aboard Soyuz TMA-19M in December 2015 and joined Kelly, Kornienko and Volkov to form the six-person Expedition 46 crew.

Samantha Cristoforetti and Tim Peake

The European signatures give the cover particular international appeal.

Samantha Cristoforetti was already aboard the station when Kelly and Kornienko arrived. Her 2014–2015 Futura mission established a female space-endurance record at the time, and she later returned to the ISS and became the first European woman to command the station.

Tim Peake arrived during the final months of the One-Year Mission aboard Soyuz TMA-19M. His Principia mission made him one of the most recognizable figures in British and European spaceflight.

The inclusion of both astronauts connects the cover with two landmark ESA missions and significantly strengthens its appeal to European collectors.

According to its provenance, it was privately carried and preserved aboard the ISS throughout the Kelly–Kornienko expedition before entering the Bracke collection.
