Soyuz TM-34 “Marco Polo” — Rare ISS-Flown Cover with Handwritten note
An exceptionally rare cover flown aboard the International Space Station during the Soyuz TM-34 “Marco Polo” mission, bearing onboard postal cancellations associated with the spacecraft’s arrival at the station and the visiting crew’s return to Earth.
The cover is especially desirable because it contains an additional handwritten confirmation of its spaceflight inside, providing a direct and highly personal record that the item was carried in orbit.
Soyuz TM-34 launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on April 25, 2002, carrying:
- Yuri Gidzenko — Russian cosmonaut and Soyuz commander
- Roberto Vittori — Italian ESA astronaut and flight engineer
- Mark Shuttleworth — South African spaceflight participant
The spacecraft docked with the International Space Station on April 27, 2002, the date represented by one of the cover’s onboard cancellations. The crew spent approximately eight days aboard the ISS before returning to Earth on May 5 aboard the older Soyuz TM-33 spacecraft.
Mark Shuttleworth: the first South African in space
The central historical importance of this cover is its association with entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.
Shuttleworth became the second privately funded spaceflight participant, following Dennis Tito, and the first South African to travel into space. NASA also identifies him as the first citizen of an independent African nation to reach orbit.
Although popularly described as a “space tourist,” Shuttleworth’s mission involved more than simply visiting the station. During his time aboard the ISS, he participated in scientific and educational activities, including biological and medical research supported by South African institutions.
His flight attracted enormous attention throughout Africa and represented an important milestone in expanding the cultural and geographical reach of human spaceflight.
Roberto Vittori and the Marco Polo mission
Soyuz TM-34 was also known within the European space program as the Marco Polo mission.
Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori flew as the spacecraft’s flight engineer, becoming the first Italian astronaut to launch aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonur. His mission was conducted through cooperation among ESA, the Italian Space Agency and the Russian space program.
Vittori conducted European scientific experiments during his stay and later returned to the ISS on two further missions, becoming one of Italy’s most experienced astronauts.
The final mission of the Soyuz-TM generation
Soyuz TM-34 also occupies an important place in spacecraft history.
It was the final flight of the Soyuz-TM model, closing a program that had supported both the Mir station and the early International Space Station. The spacecraft remained docked to the ISS after the visiting crew departed and served as the station’s emergency return vehicle until November 2002.
It was later used to return the Soyuz TMA-1 visiting crew of Sergei Zalyotin, Frank De Winne and Yuri Lonchakov to Earth, bringing the long operational history of the Soyuz-TM variant to an end.
