STS-71 — First Shuttle–Mir Docking Flown Cover, Signed by Solovyev and Budarin

A very rare official cover carried aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis to the Mir space station during STS-71, one of the defining missions of post-Cold War space exploration.

The cover was flown from Earth aboard Atlantis and postmarked aboard Mir on June 29, 1995—the exact date of the first docking between an American Space Shuttle and the Russian orbital station. It is hand-signed by cosmonauts Anatoly Solovyev and Nikolai Budarin, the two Russian members of the STS-71 launch crew who transferred to Mir to begin the long-duration Mir-19 expedition.

A handwritten notation at the lower edge certifies the cover as Shuttle-flown, providing an important direct record of its journey aboard Atlantis.

The first docking of an American Shuttle with Mir

Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on June 27, 1995, and docked with Mir on June 29. Commander Robert “Hoot” Gibson manually guided the Shuttle toward the station from below, completing the historic linkup at approximately 9:00 a.m. EDT.

The mission marked several major firsts:

• The first docking between a U.S. Space Shuttle and Mir
• The first joint operations between the Shuttle and a Russian space station
• The first exchange of a resident Mir crew using the Space Shuttle

Solovyev and Budarin launched aboard Atlantis as members of the STS-71 crew. Following the docking, they transferred into Mir and replaced the outgoing Mir-18 crew of Norman Thagard, Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov.

Their journey was historically unprecedented: they became the first resident Mir crew transported to the station aboard a Space Shuttle.

Solovyev and Budarin remained aboard Mir after Atlantis departed, while the Mir-18 crew returned to Earth aboard the Shuttle. This exchange demonstrated a level of operational cooperation between the American and Russian space programs that would have been almost unimaginable only a few years earlier.

Postmarked on the exact docking date

The onboard Mir cancellation dated June 29, 1995 gives the cover exceptional documentary importance.

It was not postmarked on an approximate anniversary or during a later commemorative event. The cancellation was applied aboard the station on the precise day Atlantis arrived and the first physical link between the American Shuttle program and Mir was established.

The date therefore connects the cover directly with the central event of STS-71 and one of the most recognizable milestones of the entire Shuttle–Mir program.
