Christina Koch: from Soyuz MS-12 to the Moon

The central historical importance of this cover lies in its connection with Christina Hammock Koch, who launched on her first spaceflight aboard Soyuz MS-12 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on March 14, 2019, together with Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague.

What was initially planned as a conventional ISS expedition developed into one of the most remarkable missions in recent space history. Koch remained aboard the station for 328 consecutive days, establishing the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

During her stay, she participated in six spacewalks, including the first all-woman spacewalks in history with fellow NASA astronaut Jessica Meir. Her extended mission provided valuable scientific data concerning the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body—research directly relevant to future expeditions to the Moon and Mars.

Koch later served as mission specialist aboard Artemis II, joining Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen on the first crewed mission of NASA’s Artemis lunar program.
