A deeply personal and exceptionally charming artifact of life aboard the International Space Station: an original Christmas card and matching cover sent by Karen Chiao, wife of Expedition 10 commander Leroy Chiao, to Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov aboard the ISS.

Both the envelope and the enclosed Christmas card were carried into orbit and officially postmarked aboard the station on December 25, 2004—Christmas Day.

A Christmas greeting sent into space

While millions of families celebrated Christmas on Earth, Expedition 10 crew members Leroy Chiao and Salizhan Sharipov were living and working aboard the International Space Station.

Chiao served as Expedition 10 commander and NASA science officer, while Sharipov served as Soyuz commander and ISS flight engineer. Together they formed the station’s two-person resident crew from October 2004 until April 2005.

The card was sent by Karen Chiao, Leroy Chiao’s wife at the time, to her husband’s Russian crewmate. NASA’s astronaut biography records that Leroy and Karen Chiao married in 2003.

This personal connection gives the item an emotional quality far beyond that of an ordinary commemorative cover. It reflects the friendships and family relationships that supported international crews during months of separation from home.

Expedition 10: an American–Russian crew in orbit

The resident crew consisted of:

• Salizhan Sharipov — Roscosmos cosmonaut, Soyuz commander and Expedition 10 flight engineer

NASA identifies Chiao and Sharipov as the Expedition 10 crew, with Sharipov serving as the mission’s Soyuz commander and ISS flight engineer.

Their mission included scientific research, station maintenance, cargo operations and preparations for spacewalks. The two crew members lived aboard the station for approximately six months, relying on close cooperation between the American and Russian space programs.
