A rare flown artifact from the golden age of lunar exploration: an Apollo 15 mission-flown national flag of Portugal, measuring approximately 6 × 4 inches, originating from the personal collection of James Irwin.

During the Apollo 15, astronauts David Scott, James Irwin, and Alfred Worden traveled to the Moon aboard the Apollo spacecraft. Scott and Irwin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Falcon in the Hadley–Apennine region, while Worden remained in lunar orbit in the Command Module.

Apollo astronauts traditionally carried small national flags, mission patches, and commemorative items as part of the mission’s Personal Preference Kits (PPKs). These items traveled into space with the crew and later became treasured historical artifacts tied directly to humanity’s exploration of the Moon.

This Portuguese flag was among those carried during the mission and later preserved by Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin, making it a genuine flown relic from one of the most scientifically important Apollo missions. Apollo 15 was the first “J-mission,” featuring extended lunar surface operations and the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, greatly expanding the range of exploration on the Moon.
