Apollo 15 Crew-Signed Insurance Cover – From the Personal Collection of Command Module Pilot Alfred Worden

This exceptional artifact is an Apollo 15 insurance cover, originating from the personal collection of Alfred Worden, Command Module Pilot of the mission. The cover is hand-signed by all three Apollo 15 astronauts – Commander Dave Scott, Lunar Module Pilot Jim Irwin, and CMP Al Worden – and bears additional provenance: Worden has both annotated and certified the reverse side of the cover in his own hand. It also includes a separate signed Certificate of Authenticity from Worden.

Insurance covers were created by Apollo astronauts as a practical way to provide financial security for their families. Since life insurance was either unobtainable or prohibitively expensive for astronauts, the crews prepared special limited-edition postal covers, signed before launch and left with family members. If tragedy struck, these signed covers would serve as valuable collectibles for their families to sell. Only a finite number of covers were produced for each mission, making them highly desirable flown-era relics of the Apollo program.

Apollo 15 (July 26 – August 7, 1971) was the fourth lunar landing mission and the first of the so-called “J-missions,” which emphasized extended scientific exploration of the Moon. Scott and Irwin explored the Hadley-Apennine region, operating the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) on the Moon for the first time, while Worden conducted extensive orbital science and later performed a deep-space EVA during the return journey. The mission returned 170 pounds of lunar samples and dramatically expanded our understanding of the Moon’s geology.
