Mercury MR-3 "Freedom 7" flown parachute fragment
Mercury Redstone 3 was piloted by Alan Shepard and became the first manned US spaceflight on may 5th. Freedom 7 was also the first crewed flight of Project Mercury and had the ultimate objective of putting an astronaut into orbit around the Earth and return him safely. Shepard's mission was a 15-minute suborbital flight and a technical success.
Triangle swatch of parachute material mounted on a 7x9'' rigid foam board certified on the backside.
The source of this heatshield fragment is NASA technician Hal French who was given permission to cut parts of the parachute into souvenirs back then - a copy of his certification to us will come with the presentation.
