Gemini 8 - Neil Armstrong and David ScottHeatshield material mounted on an 8x10 presentation certified on the backside.
3 months after Gemini 6 and 7 the Gemini 8 spacecraft with the two astronauts Armstrong and Scott has launched to perform a docking with an unmanned "Agena target vehicle" launched one and a half-hour earlier. After five orbits Gemini 8 and the Agena flew in formation for half an hour before docking.
For another half an hour the two spacecraft flew together before the astronauts realized that they were rolling faster and faster. Neil Armstrong remained calm and slowly regained control of the spacecraft after undocking from the Agena and using the thrusters of the reentry. Mission Control in Houston told the crew to end the mission earlier than planned and return to Earth.
The source of this heatshield fragment was a larger block of heatshield encased into lucite as a presentation piece given to VIPs and NASA workers as a recognition for their work in the space program.
This edition is limited to 40 presentations only.
Please note: Due to the nature of the source artifact each presentation differs slightly in color and shape.
