Believed to have flown on the dress rehearsal flight with the mannequin Ivan Ivanovich before Yuri Gagarin went into space though there is no further documentation for it available. The Soviet Vostok programme was a project to put the first Soviet citizens into low Earth orbit and return them safely. It succeeded in placing the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin, in a single orbit in Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961. There were seven unmanned test flights and six crewed spaceflights between 1961 and 1963 with cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin, Gherman Titov, Andriyan Nikolayev, Pavel Popovich, Valery Bykovsky and the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova.
